Pre-Payment Electricity Metering
Policy measure

According to the IEAs Energy Efficiency Database (2011), the Indian government introduced a mandatory pre-payment system for all government departments and private sector consumers in an attempt to reduce energy consumption in both the private and the public sector. The system was introduced in 2007 and focused on consumers with a single phase and three phase electricity load below 45kw. The aim of this initiative was to discourage power usage and ensure payment of bills.
