Energy S&L of Appliances in South Africa
Policy measure

“The Department of Mines and Energy (DME) is the primary governmental agency responsible for appliance S&L policy in South Africa.  DME formally announced energy information labeling based on the European A to G scale in May 2004.” (APEC, 2012)

Implementation

According to (APEC, 2012), “the label grading A-G is determined by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) and the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS). Local manufacturers are required to produce a report from an accredited test laboratory. Once this report is received, the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) Regulatory Affairs issues a Letter of Authority, which allows for the national trading of an appliance that complies with certain standards.”
