Colombian Technical Standards and Certification Institute (ICONTEC)
Policy measure

According to ECLAC (2010), the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism have issued new technical standards for the design and dimensions of labels indicating rational and efficient electrical energy use on specific products as of July 2007. The Colombian Technical Standards and Certification Institute (ICONTEC) was established to provide technical information and to study and establish standards.

Challenges

One challenge to the proper implementation of energy efficiency standards is that the standards produced by, e.g., ICONTEC are not mandatory for producers and other energy users. The organization awards certification but does not regulate quality and efficiency, which is the task of the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce. (ECLAC, 2010)
